Fishing was more exciting than she had expected, though there were still interminable periods of doing nothing while waiting for the fish to bite. In the end, she caught one bass to his two, and they had a feast ready for dinner when they returned to the cleaning station outside the cabin.

“Get the knife in there just like that.”

She followed Andre’s directions for skinning and filleting the fish with expert motions.

“You’re natural at that.” He sounded impressed.

She laughed. “I’m a surgeon by trade, and while I’ve never operated on a fish before, the actual cutting process isn’t a lot different.”

He clapped a hand on her shoulder. “In that case, your reward for being so good at it is to get to do it every time we catch fish.”

She rolled her eyes as she set aside the set of knives and started washing her hands with the faucet and bucket system rigged up outside the house. “What an honor.” Inside though, the cockles of her heart warmed as she imagined future trips with Andre to his cabin. It wouldn’t be under such terrible circumstances, and they would be free to enjoy each other and fill all the boring times in more interesting ways.

“I’ll cook, since you cleaned.”

She shrugged as she followed him inside, leaning against the counter. “I’d rather help you. I’m not sure what to do with myself here.”

“How about you make the salad and open the wine?”

“That, I can handle.”
